The oboe studio at Kansas State University offers students an encouraging and challenging environment to learn and develop as musicians and educators.  Members of the oboe studio have a wide variety of interests and enjoy great camaraderie.  The oboe studio includes music education and performance majors, as well as oboists who pursue music minors and other degrees as varied as architectural engineering, veterinary medicine, and biology.

Oboists at K-State have a weekly lesson with Dr. Lewis and participate in a weekly oboe seminar as well as in regular reed-making classes.  Oboists frequently come to K-State with little reed-making experience and are surprised at how quickly their reed-making skills develop in this environment.  Oboe seminar classes offer focused study of elements of oboe technique, an introduction to significant repertoire, and projects that introduce historical oboe recordings and interesting writings about the oboe.

Oboists also participate in the Double Reed Ensemble and smaller chamber ensembles.  Each semester, oboists rehearse and perform with one of the large ensembles, including the KSU Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and Concert Band.  With these ensembles, students enjoy traveling to perform regionally, nationally, and internationally.  Please contact Dr. Lewis with questions or if you’d like to learn more about oboe study at K-State.

Dr. Lewis has been Assistant Professor of Music at Kansas State University since 2008, where she teaches oboe and music history, directs the double reed ensemble and performs with the Konza Winds faculty quintet.
